 Excerpt

“Do you think I’m a con artist or a victim?”

“I think you’re a woman who has been hurt.” No denying that. “One of my team members, Wade Monroe, is contacting the Montgomery family. We’ll get DNA from them and find out—”

“If I’m Jessica.” There was hope in the words. Enough hope to break his heart.

Gabe nodded.

“When will we know?”

It would take a few days, even with the strings that he could pull. “As soon as possible,” he said, not wanting to give her a specific timetable.

“Thank you.” Then, just like that, she was across the car, giving him a tight hug. “Thank you.”

His arms wrapped around her, an instinctive response. She smelled faintly of flowers, a sweet scent that teased his nose, and her body was soft against his.

She tried to pull away, as if realizing what she’d just done.

For an instant he was tempted to hold her, to keep her close.

She’s a client. Focus.

He let her go, but his body ached.

“I … um … I should get inside.”

Yes, she should. While he was still clutching tight to his control. The control that said he shouldn’t push her. Shouldn’t want her so much. Not when she’d already been hurt so badly.

Her fingers reached for the door.

“Let me,” he said, voice rumbling, and Gabe climbed from the Jag. In seconds he was on the passenger side, opening her door for her. She rose, and her body brushed against his.

He stepped back. Distance. He seriously needed to put some distance between then. But even with some fast steps back, he could still smell that light and sexy scent that clung to her body.

And he still wanted her.

“Your shrink asked me a lot of questions about you,” Eve told him as she stood temptingly close.

Gabe inclined his head. “I’m sure—”

“I think she wanted to know why I respond so much to you.”

Oh, hell, she’d just said … He cleared his throat even as part of his body surged in quick response to her. “It’s a tense situation, you’re—”

“You don’t look at me as if I’m a victim.”

He stopped talking.

“I mean, you know what I am, but you still look at me and seem to just see me … as a woman.”

“Others see you the same way.” Doc Tyler sure did. Bastard.

“It’s different with you,” she murmured as she stepped even closer to him. Her head had tilted back so she could look into his eyes. “I don’t know what I’ve felt for other men before.”

Why did the idea of others have his body knotting with tension?

“But I know that when I see you, I want.” A hushed confession. “I just … I needed to tell you that.”

And he needed to make his self-control a hell of a lot stronger. Her lips were just inches from his, and he wanted her mouth beneath his. Wanted her lips open. Needed to taste her.

“You’re the first man I’ve wanted since I opened my eyes in that hospital.”

He could actually feel his control splintering. Client. Cli—

“You probably don’t want me. I—I might not be your type.”

Now her gaze had fallen, as if in embarrassment. Had she really just asked if she was his type?

She was probably every damn man’s type.

“But you make me feel normal again, so I had to tell you—”

His fingers curved under her chin. “Eve …”

Her smile was a little too big. Too bright. “I don’t think I can handle anything else right now, I’m …” She pulled away. Stumbled onto the sidewalk. “I just wanted to tell you how I felt,” she told him again.

Then she walked into the shelter, her steps hurried. As if she were running.

From him.

He stared after her. She wanted him.

And she was so beyond his reach.

Spotlight & Review: Aconite by C Alvarez

Little known fact about this cover.....Christines kids helped her design it. She promised them her first book cover, they could help create! This is their design! How cool is that!

Blurb:

Who knew a truck stop post card would send Alexis Davis’s life spiraling into a supernatural destiny predicted lifetimes before.

Gods, Magic, Fated Love; it was nothing that the shy, quiet Alexis ever could have imagined existed.

Alexis had no desire to take over the family business or follow in her mother’s footsteps, so armed with her life savings and a fresh tattoo she takes off to the quaint little fishing port of Reedsport, Oregon; where she meets two men that awaken something frightening within her very soul.

Dominant and dark Sebastian Gates and the sleek and sexy Jonathan Evans pull her into a life where the lines between her past, present and future
become one.

When they both begin to take part in the dreams that she has drawn comfort from, Alexis learns that none of them are really what they seem. But they are not the only ones; she quickly finds others that play an intricate part in what has come to pass and what is coming. If that wasn’t enough the tattoo that she had placed across her chest has taken on a life of its own. Leaving her in pain beyond anything she has ever experienced before. Through her dreams and the men that cannot help but complicate her life further, Alexis learns that she has a target on her head that has carried over from one life to the next.

A dark coven of witches known as the Elektita believe she is the one that will restore their powers taken by the Gods long ago. A prophecy set in motion by her very own family line. There is one problem; her destiny has put a wrench in the Elektita’s plans, somehow intertwining within a curse that leaves everyone around her at the mercy of the moon.

Who can Alexis trust? The two men that have despised each other for centuries or the powerful Elektita that wants nothing more than to wield the power of the Gods?

Excerpt:
"Stop!" I screamed into the dark room. Instantly the whirr of the ceiling fan seized along with the humming of the mini fridge. My breath caught in my throat at the sudden silence of the world around me. Even the noises outside my window seemed to fade into nothingness. Fear slammed down on all the craziness inside my head; fear of it all.

"That's it!" The air seemed to bow in resistance with my sudden outburst. It had stopped, too, heeding my command. I jerked the bottle off the table, slicing through the world’s resistance and headed for the door. The movements were forced, opposing the motionlessness that occupied the surrounding space. The hallway felt like a blessing; the air flowed as it should and I could hear the garbled sounds of televisions in other occupied rooms. Whatever was going on only affected my room. Linda wasn't at the front desk and I was more than thrilled that I didn't have to explain my growing insanity. I just needed to escape. I walked towards the water, the waves beckoning me out with them. The noises of the night seemed to be unaffected by whatever it was that had happened. I threw my head back in invitation, silently willing the dark serenity to consume me. As I reached the shore the water reflected a thousand night lights, giving life to the emotions that had resumed their battle inside of me. I perched myself on a large rock, letting its strength and solidity anchor me down.  The water's salty tears splattered against my skin, giving life to the tears that flowed from me. I cried with her, sharing my tears, letting them ride the waves together. I drank and raged with the night. Wind whipped around me, cocooning me in its embrace; protecting me from my growing madness. I could almost hear the soft bay of the wolves along the waves which drove a burst of laughter through my tears. I sounded hollow and unlike myself. I chucked the bottle which only had a few swallows left into the cold expanse, listening to the glass shatter through the ocean song.
I felt completely lost, consumed in the night. I couldn't find the thoughts that would give me an answer to what was happening to me. I watched as the ocean’s anger took its course all around me. Something about this night had her up in arms as well. At this moment I was in the company of a kindred soul. I sat still, letting her fight out her anger. I let the ocean have its turn to cry. Finally the waves began to glide and sway, ceasing its angry dance. The winds brushed against my cool skin, wiping away the remainder of my tears. We were both exhausted and spent; our emotional turmoil sated. Weariness left my body and mind heavy as I worked to make it back to the Inn before it gave out completely. The front desk remained empty and unwelcoming as I passed. I couldn't fight the exhaustion–not even to strip away my grief soaked clothes, letting sleep take over.

My Review:
I was sucked into this one from the start and couldn't put it down til I finished it!
There was such a big mystery in this. Alexis is trying to figure out who she really is and with every new insight and question answered a ton more follow.
All of the characters are so complex. When you think one may be a bad guy the next chapter you find something new out. Nobody is who they really seem. I am so torn between Jonathan and Sebastian. Each are very egotistical and think they know what's best for Alexis. Both are so alpha male and demanding. Where I may love one guy one chapter I fall for the other the next.
This does end on a cliffhanger and I am eagerly awaiting the next book. This is such a complex story I can't wait to see how it all unfolds.

Derek The muscle in my jaw clenches hard, but my voice stays calm. “Open the door, Melissa.” “No.” I step back ready to snap that chain with a swift kick, when she pushes it closed and the noise of that f**king deadbolt sounds again. “God dammit!” I shout as I shove my key back into the lock. I’m turning it open when I hear scraping noises on the other side. This time when I push against the wood, it doesn’t move at all. Resting my forehead against the door, I take another deep breath, fighting for control. “Please let me in.” “You promised!” She yells from the other side. “You looked in my eyes and promised.” “Baby, I didn’t know how serious this was.” “I won’t hear any more lies from you. Take your shit and leave. It’s over.” She’s crying now, and all semblance of control I had is gone. This is not happening. Stepping back, I hit the door with my shoulder as hard as I can. A low growl escapes my throat on impact. The door doesn’t budge. “Open the door,” I repeat. Again, she says, “No.” Stepping back, I kick it with the sole of my foot. The doorjamb shudders, but it doesn’t give. “Don’t make me call the police,” she shouts from the other side. That nearly sends me into a rage. My shoulders are rapidly rising and falling as I step back and survey this situation. The woman I love has thrown me out and is now threatening the cops on me. Am I having some kind of f**king bad dream? The only possible way I might get in the house comes to mind. “I want to see Dex.” She’s angry, yes, but if we can look at each other, talk it out… Maybe she needs to yell at me. I can listen, hear what she needs to say, and everything can go back to normal. “I’ll talk to my mom. We’ll work out a schedule for you to visit him.” My fist is pounding on the wood before I even realize what I’m doing. This is f**king idiotic, and I need to get on the other side of this f**king door and hold Melissa in my arms. “Stop it!” I can hear the break in her voice, and it rips me apart. “You’re scaring Dex.” Breathing hard, I rest my head against the wood again. Looking to the side, I can see the cracks that have formed around the doorjamb from my attempts to break it down. Sound filters through the spaces easily. The noise of my Melissa crying is just on the other side. I can’t take this. “Melissa.” This time I’m pleading with her. “Please open the door.” “No.” She says softly, between sniffles. My heart is twisting in my chest. “What do you want me to do, baby? Just tell me what to do.” “I want you to go away.” Her voice shakes as she says the words. “I can’t do that.” I’m breathing hard now. “I love you.” “Not enough to keep your promise.” “I love you more than enough.” Gripping the wooden frame, I fight my emotions. “Let me in.” “I’m done talking. Take your bags and go.” Noises on the other side sound like Dex whining. I hear her go to him and attempt to soothe him. Stepping back, I look at the windows and consider breaking one of them. For several long seconds, I visualize myself doing it. I look around the perimeter and see every place I can force my way inside, go in there and gather her in my arms, make her stop saying these things. But I don’t. It would scare Dex, it would anger Mel… It would only make things harder for me. Instead I do what she asks. Ice is in the pit of my stomach as I pick up my duffel and the largest suitcase and carry them to my car. Popping the trunk, I put them inside and go back for the remaining two.

Review & Spotlight: Sliding Into Second by Ella Jade

If you're into hot, dirty-talkin', sexy baseball heroes I may have just the thing to quench that thirst...

Have you met my players?

Sliding Into Second

Jilted once before, now it's her turn to level the playing field.

Hotshot sports reporter Sage Millan has been busy making a name for herself in the male dominated world of baseball. She's just landed her dream job, and her first assignment is covering the newly crowned World Series champions, The Kingston Crushers. This is the opportunity of a lifetime. The only problem…her ex-boyfriend, and the only man she's ever loved, is the team's second baseman. Things ended badly between them, and she's not sure she can put those demons to rest.

Professional baseball player Nicolas Cordova is having the time of his life. His team has just won the World Series, and with the victory comes more fame, women, and exposure than he ever could have imagined. But things are about to change for the sexy, charismatic athlete. He never expected his ex-girlfriend to walk back into his life, much less the locker room.

These days Sage is smarter, more mature, and doesn't plan on being played a second time. Her appearance stirs old memories for Nic. She's the one he let get away in the name of his career. He vows he can be the man she needs this time around. Will that be enough to mend her broken heart?

Excerpt...

“I’ll admit I’ve had many women in the past, and I can’t apologize for living. But as the years went by, my feelings for you were always someplace deep in my heart. I know that’s why I can’t settle down. Why I can’t find the peace I’ve been searching for. It doesn’t exist without you.”
“How can you say things like that? You don’t even know the woman I’ve become. I’m not that girl who relied on you, the one who would’ve followed you anywhere. I’m not her anymore, Nic. I can’t ever be her again.”
“Maybe I’m not asking for her.” He leaned closer to her face. “Maybe I want to know the woman you are today. I want another shot at this.”
“No,” she whispered.
“If you remember anything about me, I have a hard time with that word.” He tipped her chin, focusing on her lips. “I am going to kiss you. Right here and right now.”
Her knees buckled as a cool tremor swept through her. She wanted to say no. It was the only logical word to mutter, but her heart didn’t want her to say it. Her body wasn’t on board with turning him down either. The warmth that built in her stomach had moved lower, and now all she could think about was his lips on hers.
“It doesn’t sound like you’re asking,” she breathed out.
“I’m not.”
Before she could say anything else, his mouth was on hers, eager, but slow and soft. His stubble grazed along her chin as he tilted his head and deepened their bond. The sound throughout the crowded lobby seemed to fade into the background, and soon, all she could hear was her heart pumping loud between her ears. Why did he have to be such a freakin’ good kisser?
After the incredibly long connection, he pulled away, but not before stopping to kiss the bottom corner of her mouth like he used to.
“I’ve waited a long time to do that,” he said. “It was worth every lonely minute.”
“I... Nic...” She’d always had the gift of words. It was what she did for a living, but in that moment, all of her thoughts were jumbled and senseless.
“It’s okay.” He grinned as he stroked her cheek. “Let’s get something to eat and maybe figure this out. Whatever this is.”
“No.” She ran her hands along his strong chest, resting them on his shoulders.
“Don’t over analyze this, baby.” He glanced down at her hands on his body. “Let’s just go with it.”
“That’s what I’m trying to tell you.” She took a breath and continued before she lost her nerve. “Take me upstairs to your room. I know how we can figure this out.”
“What are you asking?” He placed his hand on the small of her back, drawing her closer to him. “You need to be real clear.”
“I want to go upstairs with you.”
“That’s not why I kissed you.”
“Isn’t it?” She smirked. “We’re adults now, Nicky. Let’s settle this like adults.”
“I’m not looking to settle anything. That usually means it’s over, and we’re nowhere near over.” He motioned for Joe. “I’ll take care of the bar tab and then we’ll get dinner.”
“No.” She draped her arms around his neck, intoxicated by the idea of being so close to him again. He may be older now, and may have lost those boyish looks, but the man he had become suited him and drove her wild with need.
“What did I tell you about that word?”
“I can guarantee I won’t be using it once we’re in your bedroom.” She ran her tongue along her top lip. “I’m going to the ladies room. When I come out, if you’re not by the elevators waiting for me, I’ll know that kiss was nothing more than the heat of the moment and we can go on with our lives.”
“Sage?”
“Shh.” She pressed her lips to his. “Now who’s over analyzing?” She reached for her purse and coat hanging on the back of the stool. “I’ll see you in a few minutes.” I hope.

This is book 2 in the Kingston Heat Series but both books stand alone and can be read in either order.

My Review:
I zoomed through this one! It was super sexy and sweet. A second chance romance that I definitely rooted for!
I really liked both Sage and Nick. They both could be completely stubborn at times and I wish they would have just communicated more then things could have been resolved a lot sooner. But then that probably wouldn't have made for much of a story.
I loved how Nick wouldn't give up on Sage. He wouldn't let her just walk away and have them be a thing of the past.  I could also see why Sage didn't want to chance her heart being broken again but I think she really needed to try and let go of what happened and move on. See how they have both grown. But I understood both sides of the story and why each other them did what they did. I really felt for them both. They had amazing chemistry even after being apart for seven years. The sex was HOT!
This one stood alone fine, I definitely plan on going back and reading the first book in the series. I really enjoyed the authors writing style.
