Help ghosts, stop a thief, and try not to die…
Necromancer Selene Vanream helps ghosts settle their affairs so they can move on. But when breaking the rules gets her in trouble, she’s bumped down to tracking ghosts trying to avoid the afterlife. Ghosts like Ethan Lance, who claims he was kicked out of his body when someone else jumped in. Which might be plausible—if such a thing were possible. And if Micah, Selene’s partner, didn’t pull her into an investigation of brutal murders that lead directly back to Ethan.
But when the whole mess puts Selene’s life in danger, she suddenly has very personal reasons to get Ethan’s body back. Between her uncomfortable relationship with Micah, and problems with her boss, Selene learns just how much trouble it can be when you don’t follow the rules…
My Review:
From the first sentence of this book I was hooked and didn't want it to end. There was so much to this story, humor, suspense, action, and some romance. I really hope that this turns into a series. Its very fun and unique.
I really like the main character Selene. She has a lot of flaws, she can be extremely selfish and egotistical at times but overall she's a good person. I like how she is just a very strong woman but can still be insecure at times. Plus she was just a lot of fun. She's extremely sarcastic. Its amusing just to see what's going to come out of her mouth.
I love Micah too. He's very hot and cold with Selene but you find out his reasoning's and can't help but root for him.
This was just a very fun adventure and I really hope for more in this. The ending leaves it way open for a sequel that I very much look forward to.
A deadly curse, a dangerous assassin, and one shot to save everyone she loves…
Malachi Erami can’t fall in love. After she’s caught with Knave, the witch Queen’s favorite lover, she’s cursed to savagely butcher any man she falls for. Exiled to live among humans, Malachi runs a bar that serves magic-laced drinks, but since her curse labels her high risk, she’s also closely monitored. Julian Vira is her latest babysitter, but he’s also the first man since Knave that she’s been attracted to. Good-looking and nonjudgmental of her horrible curse? Yeah, he’s hard to resist.
But when Malachi finds a body behind her bar, she knows she’s in trouble. If the Witches Control Council gets wind of it, she’ll be accused of murder and sent to her death. And when her friends start getting framed for murder, she realizes she’s not the only target. Malachi and Julian dig into the evidence to clear her name, but the closer they get to answers, the closer the curse comes to taking over. So when Malachi uncovers a plot to kill the witch Queen, she finds herself suddenly recruited into service, with the promise of having her curse lifted and a reunion with Knave as well. But if she fails, Knave will die. And she and Julian might not live long enough to see that happen.
My Review:
A.J. Locke definitely has a way a sucking you into her books and making you not want to put them down. This was a very unique and interesting world that she spun. Very fairytalesque but incredibly different.
I really like that the author makes very strong female characters. Malachi is no different. She was cursed into a literal "maneater" so she can never develop feelings for anyone or she'll attack them. She still tries to make the best of the situation and adept to being put into our world more or less. But she still fights for what she believes in and protects those she cares for.
My only real issue with this one was Malachi's feelings for both Knave and Julian. I can understand why she would fall for Julian after five years of being outcast and treated like a monster and he saw her for who she truly is. But she spends all this time mourning and missing Knave that it just left me unsettled. So while I really like Julian it was just hard to root for them to be together.
I really hope for a sequel to this one. It was a really fun world to read about.
I really look forward to seeing what's next from Ms. Locke.
