Review: Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost

Happy Halloween!

Description from Goodreads: Half-vampire Catherine Crawfield is going after the undead with a vengeance, aiming for the father who ruined her mother. Bones, a vampire bounty hunter, captures Cat, and agrees to train her until her battle reflexes are as sharp as his fangs. But a group of killers pursue them. Bones is as tempting as any man with a heartbeat.

This one was a reread for me. I forgot how much I love Bones! He is such a fun character with his snarkiness. Cat is also really awesome. Her fierceness and humor makes me laugh out loud.  I love the chemistry and banter between the two and the build up towards their relationship. This is such a fun series, full of action and romance. It's definitely one of my favorite vampire series.

One of my favorite scary movies!

I had a lot of trouble connecting with the characters in this one. It was a very short story so no real time to bond. The first chapter really drew me in but it seemed like everything had to move to fast. It would have been much better suited as a longer novel. I really did like the plot and the sex steams were very steamy but I just didn't really feel that connection. So it was a good idea but I would have just liked more of a build up on it. I will definitely try the next in the series though since its a longer story and hopefully it will be better for me.

But he was wrong, and his feelings for her will only bring trouble in an investigation this dangerous. As their passions reignite, they see a possible future together. Until her visions show her the face of the murderer—a man Claude can never betray.

Ghosts of Kingston Cottage by Libby Bishop

She believes in ghosts.

Medium and paranormal investigator Arabella Pierce is sent with her crew to Kingston Cottage, a haunted Maine seafarer’s cottage on an isolated island, but for this investigation, her boss has stuck them with skeptical reporter Lucas Brown. Though he’s hot as they come, Arabella can’t trust a man whose sole job is to discredit her and the work she does. Not after what happened with the last few skeptics...

He believes in evidence.

But Lucas isn’t as skeptical as he seems—he wants the truth, no matter what that is. When the ghosts appear, he and Arabella must work together—in tight quarters—to convince the resident ghosts to move on before a storm strands the entire crew on the island. If Arabella can put aside her prejudices, she and Lucas just might have a shot at a lifetime.

Ghost of the Falls by Sarah Gilman

Determined to prove she’s fit for the family business, exorcist Jade Clarence knows the assignment waiting in Maine is her last chance. Born into a family of exorcists, Jade’s unorthodox ideas have gotten her into trouble in the past...and cost the life of a client.

After haunting a Maine state park for more than a century, Dutch Hutchinson will do whatever it takes to bring an end to his unfulfilling existence. When an act of arson brings a beautiful exorcist to town, Dutch takes corporeal form in order to spend his last hours in her company.

Jade quickly uncovers Dutch’s true identity and finds herself falling for the man behind the spirit. But when Jade’s legacy threatens their future, they will have to overcome the greatest of odds—life and death.

Nor is she prepared for the attention of a good-looking refugee named Reg.

On a mission to restock their supplies, Mikayla and Reg are captured by The People and prepared for the procedure that will make them perfect, but no longer quite human. In order to escape, they need to rely on each other…if Mikayla can trust a man who seems too good to be true.

Review: Nightfall by Ellen Connor

8025911

Description from Goodreads: Growing up with an unstable, often absent father who preached about the end of the world, Jenna never thought in her wildest nightmares that his predictions would come true. Or that he would have a plan in place to save her-one that includes the strong, stoic man who kidnaps and takes her to a remote cabin in the Pacific Northwest.

The mysterious ex-Marine named Mason owes a life-debt to Jenna's father. Skilled and steadfast, he's ready for the prophesied Change, but Jenna proves tough to convince. Until the power grid collapses and mutant dogs attack-vicious things that reek of nature gone wrong.

When five strangers appear, desperate to escape the bloodthirsty packs, Jenna defies her protector and rescues them. As technology fails and the old world falls away, Jenna changes too, forever altered by supernatural forces. To fight for their future, she and Mason must learn to trust their instinctive passion-a flame that will see them through the bitter winter, the endless nights, and the violence of a new Dark Age.

This was an interesting and unique take on the whole end of the world. The changes started slowly and took a few years to fully happen. While I'm still confused about a lot of that it was an overall good book.
I really liked Jenna. She is a very strong minded person and cares about others while Mason is more driven to follow his promise that he made to her father years before about protecting her. She heard others being attacked and let them into their safe haven. You come to find out later that they all have a place in this prophecy that Jenna's father was talking about.
Mason was harder to like at first, he is just so closed off finding emotions as weakness where Jenna wanted him to want her to be as essential to him as he is to her. There was a lot of sexual tension between them but it wasn't a fast emotional connection.
There was an interesting twist with the "demon" dogs and talks of different prophecies and magic. So overall an interesting read. I will definitely have to read the next to see more about the changes in this world.

Review: To Love and Serve by Caridad Pineiro

Description from Goodreads:

Born to Love…
Five years ago, vampire Ryder Latimer stepped into the path of a bullet meant for FBI Agent Diana Reyes, at once saving her life and condemning her to death when his blood contaminates her open wounds. Now only an experimental treatment, transfusions, and allowing Ryder to sink his teeth into her when they make love keep her alive.

Born to Survive…

Ryder has always known that no matter what they try, Diana can’t possibly survive what contact with his blood did to her. The reality for him is that no matter how much he loves her, he will lose her if he doesn’t turn her—a choice Diana may have put off for too long.

Born to Serve…

Even as her health continues to deteriorate and they battle with that difficult decision, Diana tracks a serial killer targeting their vampire friends. It’s a dangerous job, but she was born to it and, with Ryder’s help, she’ll serve and protect until the day she dies—or until a miracle turns their world upside down.

I received this in exchange for an honest review:

I had a little bit of trouble getting into this one at first. This is book 2 and I haven't read book 1 so I was a little lost on some of it. They do refer back some but it still feels a little like you missed part of a movie. But that being said once I got into the swing of it I really enjoyed it.
You can really feel the chemistry and love between Diana and Ryder. They are struggling quite a bit with Diana not wanting to be a vampire because she's afraid that she couldn't control her demon and Ryder not wanting to lose her. So there's definitely a big struggle between loving Ryder and her fear of what she would become.
There was a lot of suspense and build up in this. There's a serial killer hunting vampires and Ryder while trying to help stop him also doesn't want Diana involved. Diana's in the process of trying to get her job back with the FBI and helping her friend and would be boss on the sides with another serial killer case.  The 2 worlds do eventually collide and Diana has to help stop the killer before he hurts more vampires.
I definitely can't wait to read more in this series. I love the blending of the human world and the vampires. I will go back and read the 1st and look forward to getting the 3rd when it comes out.

Review: The Coward's Way out by Kallysten

18310510

Description from Goodreads: When she was first trapped in the Ward mention, an unwanted guest to millionaire and vampire Morgan Ward, Angelina could think of nothing else but how to break the compulsion that kept her prisoner. Her reluctant warden was certainly sexy and intriguing, but his standoffish behavior was outputting to say the least.

After a couple of weeks, however, after several ‘mind-trips’ into a fantasy reality in which Morgan is a perfect gentleman – and perfect lover – Angelina finds herself falling for him and struggling to understand why he tries so hard to push her away. How can a man be charming and attentive one minute… and yet deliberately infuriating the next?

A visit from Irene, this time more interested in a stroll down memory lane than in murder, starts to explain Morgan’s fears. But can Angelina break down his barriers before it’s finally time to leave, or will his past prove to be too deep of a wound to heal?

I received this from the author in exchange for a review.

This one was a lot more emotional than the other installments. I love that we definitely get more insight into Morgan and why he is so cut off from feeling for Angelina or at least trying not to. He had a very painful past. It just draws you to his character more wanting to comfort him. There is definitely a huge build up in this series where they just keeps getting better and better. I only wish they would stop ending on cliffhangers! I need the next one now!

This was provided by the author for me to review. It will be released on Oct. 28

This is the first in the series that I've read and I can say that I'm definitely not disappointed. I've always enjoyed books with Law enforcement agencies for the paranormal. So this was really neat. I really liked both of the main characters in this, Claude and Beatrice. You could definitely feel the chemistry between them. But Claude also really hurt Bea so you feel for her. The story was intriguing without being to dark. Bea can get visions from objects to help solve crimes. Claude comes to her off the books wanting her to see if she could see the person behind a series of murders. When Bea gets the vision the face she sees is someone that haunted her past. They both want to stop these crimes but Claude feels that her vision isn't right and Bea needs to find the truth. There's a lot of unresolved issues between them but still a friendliness and heat. It was an overall good book. I love all the different paranormal creatures that pop up. I will definitely grab the rest in this series.
